Traffic tickets in Greece: objections, deadlines and licence withdrawal

Challenging a Greek traffic ticket: the three-day objection period, special digital service rules, supporting documents and driving licence withdrawal.

First establish what was served and when

Read the entire notice: issuing authority, location, time, alleged conduct, legal provision, fine and any administrative measure. The general rule allows objections within three days from service to the competent authority identified in the notice. Do not wait for the payment deadline before seeking legal assessment.

Keep legible copies of every page and retain the service envelope or electronic records. If the notice identifies the wrong driver, registration number or time, record the specific discrepancy and the documents supporting it. Simply saying that a ticket is unfair does not identify the factual or legal issue requiring examination. If you do not read Greek, arrange a reliable explanation of the full notice promptly rather than relying on a short verbal summary.

Digital notices: a phone notification is not the whole file

For a notice issued through the Unified Electronic System, Article 13 of Law 5256/2025 starts the three-day objection period after ten working days have elapsed from notification in the citizen's digital inbox. This is a special rule, not an extension applicable to every traffic ticket.

Retain the notice itself, the inbox timestamp and the available evidence supporting the allegation. An SMS or email may simply alert you that a document has been deposited. Have the method of service and deadline checked immediately instead of waiting until the last day or applying this rule to a different procedure. Establish whether the notice actually comes through the specified system. A screenshot of an alert alone may not contain the information needed for an accurate deadline assessment.

Build objections around specific evidence

Hellenic Police instructions call for the notice and relevant supporting documents. Depending on the issue, these may include identification, driving licence, registration, any payment receipt and evidence supporting the objections. Use the competent authority's available official submission channel and retain proof of receipt.

Match each argument to the document or factual material that supports it. If the issue is entitlement to ride a scooter, categories, codes and licence history matter, not just the front of the licence card. If the dispute concerns the vehicle's position or signage, retain clear photographs with their location and date explained. Preserve original files without editing them. A concise chronology can make the supporting material easier to assess than a large collection of unexplained screenshots.

  • Complete notice and evidence of service or digital notification
  • Short chronology identifying the exact disputed point
  • Driver and vehicle documents, photographs or other relevant evidence
  • Copy of the submission, attachments and acknowledgement/reference number

Assess the fine and disqualification separately

A notice may impose both a monetary penalty and administrative measures. Its review needs to address each consequence rather than the fine alone. A work-related need to drive should be documented where relevant, but it does not guarantee return of the licence. Explain the practical circumstances accurately without treating them as an automatic legal exemption.

Do not assume that an objection or payment automatically lifts licence withdrawal. Before driving, establish that the measure has ceased to apply and the necessary steps have been completed. If objections are rejected, the decision and any further available remedy require individual examination. We do not promise cancellation of tickets or treat a generic template as a substitute for assessing the actual notice, evidence and procedural history.
